Doing what you love daily
The world tells us that if you do what you love daily, you will never have to work a day in your life. They sell us on the idea that we can turn our passion into a business and do it 40, or rather 80 hours a week. That sounds like a job. For many people, not only is this not feasible and they are giving up their gifts for a passion that they are mediocre at, at best, but they will also find that they lose the fire for that passion they enjoy.
To do the fun stuff, you have to do the lame stuff
Those are not my words, but directly from my little brother who was once explaining separation of wills while we were on a road trip. We have to do the things that pay the bills, serve a purpose and add economic value, and appreciate that they help fuel, both financially from and energizing standpoint, the things that we love. Many of our passion projects cannot be produced without our practical daily commitments. Think about the world’s wealthiest business owners. Notice the passions do they have outside of their core business: charitable efforts, space exploration, breakthrough technologies. No progress could be made here without their businesses. If it applies to them, it applies to us.
You are not a failure if you work a job
I have been listening to investment and personal growth podcasts for years. Many though leaders and gurus successfully convince their audience that they are in the wrong place if they have a w2, day job and J-O-B. I was one of those people. Blessed in my career, even when i was not fully committed, it was my career that allowed me to provide for my family and purchase real estate. To downplay these great opportunities to excel at a skill and track record in our craft is to show a lack of gratitude. Such ungratefulness is fruitless and can stifle you in ways you cannot understand.
The Bigger Picture
There are always going to be parts of your job that you dislike. Instead of ungratefulness for your day job, find the parts of it that you love and those that are growing important skillsets that you’d someday need for your vision. In any case, today, you are working on that vision. If you slack there, where else will you slack? Appreciate and thrive in your career by giving 100%. Be passionate and energizing. Build your track record for success. Make a difference where you are.
