Am I Being Too Subtle? – A Book Review of Sam Zell’s Autobiograpy 📖

I just finished reading Sam Zell’s autobiography, Am I Being Too Subtle – Straight Talk From a Business Rebel, and it was full of gold. For those of you who do not know, Sam Zell is a billionaire first generation Polish-American from Chicago, known for building an immense real estate empire and bringing energy and momentum to the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) industry.

An Unlikely Start

In his book, he talks about his upgringing and how it shaped his simple mindset for wealth creation and how to find it. Before I get into that, I will share the most moving part, which is how his father, a Polish businessman, was astute enough to frantically move his family out of Poland shortly before the Germans invaded, sending the Jews within to concentration camps, where most perished. The resultant journey was predetermined, well thought out and not simple.

Informational Advantage

Sam credits this incredible story to his appreciation for information and going out of your way to find it and use it to your advantage. This has been his approach to business and why he was able to get his start in student housing, grow a real estate business and subsequently pivot into other asset classes and into the corporate world. Each of these moves were to take advantage of great opportunities.

Overall Thoughts

The book itself is well-written, humorous and motivating. For those who like a good biography, consider it a great resource for getting into the mind of one of the worlds wisest businessman! Overall for business reads, I would give it 4 stars out of 5 for simplicity and detail of Sam’s recollection of his career.
